We are now in our 12th year of Covington Book Group (CBG).  New members are always welcome.  Meetings are held in the village hall on the 1st Monday of every month, except in the summer.

Our membership fluctuates but retains a core of original members.  We have grown even more in the last few months, now numbering 19, our largest group.  New members are always welcome!

We have a break in the summer to give more time to our own reading.  At our July meeting, we review our library book request list to decide what we would like to read during our next year together.

Several of us in CBG have made successful applications to become a “Book Giver”.  We have distributed specially printed World Book Night copies of which have included:

Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell

The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hahmed

We have copies of a selected title to give away to members of the public who are keen to read the book or at least willing to give it a try.  Once the book has been read (or not, as the case may be), we then hope the book will be passed on to someone else to read.  World Book Night readers are asked to register on the World Book Night website so that readers can see how far the book eventually travels.

In 2011 we donated two sets of 8 of these books to Cambridgeshire Library Service to be used for their loans to other reading groups.

World Book Night is going to be 23 April, 2015.

You might remember receiving an email from Simon Peck regarding the charity One Step at a Time and the work that they do in Africa.  Sandra Murphy regularly flies to Uganda with a suitcase full of books to help establish a library there.  CBG has made a financial contribution to the transport of the suitcase as well as donations of books to help fill it. 

Our Film Evening last year featured The Help (the book of which we had read previously).  Though this is a private event, we always have a few spare places..  If we invite you personally, all we ask is that you bring some sort snack to share, related to the film (“southern” cooking in this instance), and pay £3.50 per person to help cover the cost of the hire of the hall.  We arrive at 7 for popcorn and Cava with a 7:30 start for the film.
